Should I have a pre wedding Photo-shoot?

Yes – that was easy, read no more!

Kidding of course, read on!

There are a few reasons we consider a pre wedding shoot a good idea, let us tell you a bit more about what we do and our approach.

We regard ourselves as relaxed, fun and creative as well as many other buzzwords that most wedding photographers use! Our approach to weddings is that we are your friends who will be taking beautiful photos of you for the whole day, but wait? Friends? But you’re just a couple of random people we saw at a wedding fair, on Instagram, wherever!, you’re not friends – we’re not friends YET! So this is one (of many) great reasons to have a pre wedding shoot.

Getting to know your photographers

It’s not an issue for us to meet new people on a wedding day we have been around so many different types of people for the hundreds of weddings we have covered so we can make friends fairly easily, however a lot of people are not like this, they need to warm up to people.

A pre wedding shoot is usually a half hour meeting to plan out times and think about photo gaps/opportunities and then maybe an hour somewhere scenic to get some photos, it’s like a date with another couple with cameras, wait this sounds weird…

As we meet and talk about plans we have chit chat, find out more about each other and we will often see if we can test boundaries, nothing too crazy we just take your lead on what’s comfortable and what stuff you might be up for, this leads us into another reason a pre wedding shoot is a good idea.

Testing out creative ideas

We love taking photos of people, it’s even more fun when they’re willing to take direction, so when we come to a pre wedding shoot at a certain location we will think of things that have worked here before but also things we can do differently, the same as we do on a wedding day, sometimes we might have a new idea bouncing round in our heads and the next couple are the perfect opportunity to try it out on, so as well as a pre wedding shoot being your practice run, something’s we do or say are also practice for us! Which can create some beautiful pictures!

A collection of beautiful pictures.

So if your anything like us and 99% of the worlds couples, when it comes to pictures of the two of you it’s a selfie, a drunken pic your mate has taken, or a picture a stranger has taken that isn’t quite the right angles but your too British to tell them to do it again, but better!

So a pre wedding shoot is a dedicated time for you and your beau to dress up a bit (more on this further down) and have a professional photographer get some photos of the two of you, a pre wedding shoot usually has at least 30 finished images, so if you want to gift your nan a nice pic for the mantlepiece you’re all set! In amongst the photos we will have a variety of backdrops and positions, we keep things fluid and relaxed so we have one pose go into the next, we have a look at the camera, look at each other and a kiss, at a certain point this becomes second nature, which is great as it lets you start to concentrate on each other and those moments which in turn makes better pictures!

At the beginning it will be awkward there’s no denying that, but as we’ve just touched on it will get easier, you will relax into it, but if nothing else it will ease those photography nerves.

Wedding photography anxiety

Your experience of a wedding photographer may be as a guest, or as a bridesmaid/groomsman, most modern photographer have the same outlook as ourselves, however we still hear stories of photographers who shout orders at guests, have huge egos and your never stood in the right way! So you might be booking a wedding photographer with a little knot in your stomach thinking that the day is going to be uncomfortable for some reason, maybe noted above.

So a pre wedding shoot should put to one side those fears and anxieties, we meet, and pretty much every time we get on with people, and anyone who didn’t get on with us obviously thought we were too nice to be able to tell it to our face, which is still good, right?! Nick spend most the time looking for photo opportunities while laura spends most the time gossiping about this that and the other, by the time we leave you’ll likely find out your related (this has actually happened before), or you share best friends, or something that only her chat could uncover! But by the end 100% of couples have told us that they felt better about the wedding day photos now, the nerves were now out of the way.

Tips for a good pre wedding session

A few pointers in what makes for a good shoot;

Location- this could be countryside, seaside, forested areas or even urban settings, think about the time of year & time of day, rush hour is no fun to get stuck in, and a quayside shoot during a festival or market is going to be quite overcrowded.

Clothing- The best things to wear are smart casual, something fairly simple as we don’t want the clothes to be the focus, try and avoid tracksuits, large logos on clothing tat kinda thing.

Don’t let the nerves get the better of you, you can be nervous, its what we expect.

Don’t overthink it, just relax and let us guide you, don’t get bogged down in social media poses you’ve seen which involve gymnastic flexibility.

Don’t let the weather put you off, if its drizzly or rainy go with it, you won’t be able to call off the wedding day due to poor weather so just embrace it!

Check out some of our work!

Our website has some work we have done over the years, take a look for inspiration!

We put a lot of effort into social media, so take a look at our instagram feed, in there you will find behind the scenes weddings, wedding guides, and a whole feed full of real weddings.

Wedding photography at Backworth Hall

Louise & Daniel

Backworth Hall

Louise & Daniel booked us for wedding photography at the amazing Backworth Hall in Newcastle Upon Tyne. They were to get married at a beautiful church in Earsdon then go on to Backworth hall for their reception and evening celebrations.

We had been talking to the couple leading up to their wedding for around 2 years as they booked well in advance to secure their date, and they were very excited for their big day!

Getting Ready
Louise got ready at her mums home with her bridesmaids, mum and dad, and her daughter Maya.

When we arrived everyone was getting prepared for the big day! Hair and makeup artist was in full flow doing a great job of making everyone look stunning, and then they went across to the hairdresser’s seat for some fabulous pin up hair styles. The flowers had arrived with bouquets and button holes all with gorgeous gypsophelia.

The couples little girl Maya was having a great time and getting excited! She had her hair done too and also had a sneaky try of mum’s dress. This is a great photo to catch with your daughter and give her when she gets married in future years herself.

Louise’s mum helped her into her gorgeous gown which was a beautiful princess dress, with shoes and jewellery added her bridal look was complete.  Her dad was to walk her down the aisle and Louise helped him get his cufflinks on. With everyone ready to go they headed off to the vintage car to be whisked off to the church.

The Ceremony
Daniel was already at the church greeting guests and not looking too nervous which was great to see. He had his groomsmen around for support and they were doing a great job. We grabbed a few shots of them together before Louise arrived.

Louise arrived with her father in a gorgeous vintage car, when they entered the church there was a lovely sign for louises dad to read.

The couple made their wedding vows to each other and exchanged wedding rings, Maya was having a wander around during the ceremony which caused a few giggles all round! After managing to kneel in her dress for the blessings Daniel was finally allowed kiss his bride and the register was signed to make everything official!

They walked back up the aisle as Mr and Mrs Emptage together looking so happy!
Everyone headed out to the front of the church for a group photograph and some confetti throwing, and then all headed off to the next venue- Backworth Hall after we took a few shots of the couple with the beautiful car.

On arriving at Backworth Hall there was some time before the wedding breakfast was to be served so we worked our way through the couple’s list of family formal photographs using the steps to the hall as a backdrop. This meant all the formalities were taken care of before the meal so the rest of the day the guests could relax.

The Romantic Couple’s Photographs
After the family photos were finished we whisked the bride and groom away for a short time to grab some gorgeous couple’s shots before the meal. Back worth Hall has some amazing surroundings so we didn’t need to go far for some beautiful images!
Maya joined in for some of the photo and had fun playing with our vintage parasols with her mummy. How cute do they look together! We had a lot of fun with Daniel and Louise doing their shots and they look so happy throughout them you can tell they did too!

The Speeches
The room was set ready for the meal and looked amazing with the cake set up and purple accents through the room. Guests came in and took their seats for the speeches to begin. We see more and more speeches done before the meal so that they are out the way and people can enjoy the meal without the stress of a speech hanging over them!
Louise’s dad was up first and gave a great speech even if he did embarrass Louise and one of two of her friends with some funny stories!

Daniel went next and gave a heartfelt emotional speech and gave gifts of thanks out. The star of the show was the best man who wrote a great speech and gave out pictures to embarrass Daniel who found it hilarious! Guests were laughing from start to finish so he did a great job!

After the speeches we then took a break to let everyone enjoy their meal and we got to work on a selection of the images from the day so far so they could be ready to go up on our projector for the evening reception guests to see!  We love our Image Projector service and it goes down so well with guests as it’s a wonderful way to include evening guests in what happened during the day time and a great talking point for everyone too, as well as giving the Bride and Groom a sneaky peak at what’s to come!

Our lovely friend Craig from Tom foolery Photobooth arrived to set up his fun photo booth for the evening as well, always nice to catch up with other friendly suppliers!

Party time!
After the meal the guests made their way to the bar areas to relax while the room was set up ready for the evening celebrations. After a quick cutting of the cake was over with Mr & Mrs Emptage took to the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife, all the guests were watching as an exploding balloon above the dance floor was burst and rained bright sprinkles of confetti over the couple and then others joined them on the dance floor.
The photobooth had people queuing up for a go at some Marryoke too! The party really started then and everyone was having a great time partying on the dance floor. The night was in full flow when we left! There was a lot of partying on the dance floor with everything from spinning to The Robot being busted out!

Overall it was an amazing day for everyone and we had a brilliant time photographing the whole wedding. We hope they love their photos as much as we enjoyed taking them! Thanks to Louise and Daniel for choosing us to photograph their special day and allowing us to capture their memories to treasure for years to come, we loved it!

We wish you all the best for the future together as husband and wife!

Wedding photography at the Malmaison Newcastle

Amy & Mark

Malmaison, Newcastle upon Tyne

Amy and Mark booked us for wedding photography at the gorgeous Mal Maison Hotel in Newcastle Upon Tyne, which is right on Newcastle Quayside in stunning surroundings. Originally they had us booked for just their evening reception as they were booked to get married in Jamaica. Sadly Amy’s nana wasn’t well enough to fly and Amy couldn’t even think about saying ‘I Do’ without Nana by her side for the day. So the wedding was brought to the Mal Maison and held earlier than scheduled.

Getting Ready
When we arrived the room was full of activity getting everyone prepared for the big day! There was a makeup artist doing a great job of making everyone look stunning, and then they went across to the hairdresser’s seat for some fabulous pin up hair styles.
Amy had all her bridesmaids with her, along with her mum, nana and her daughter Emmy.
There were plenty drinks flowing and everyone was getting very excited.
Nick popped across to the guy’s room to see Mark and his groomsmen for a few shots too, they were all in great spirits and Mark didn’t look nervous at all.

Amy moved into a different room to get her dress on so there was more space and it was cooler as it was even though it was only early April it was pretty warm. The bride was starting to have quite a few nerves kicking in, and the bridesmaids were getting emotional so there were tears all round! A good job Laura was around with a pocketful of tissues to hand round!

The bridesmaids helped Amy into her dress and fastened the back for her. With some amazing shoes added and her beautiful floor length veil attached she was ready to go. She made a stunning bride- Mark is a lucky man! We loved her bouquet of beautiful flowers too!
The nerves were really starting to get to Amy, she was very anxious to get the ceremony over with. After a sit down and a chat with Nana she was feeling a little better and it was time to head to the ceremony room.

The Ceremony
The guests were all in their seats waiting for the arrival of the bridal party, and Mark was at the front with his best man.

The room looked great and there were the big illuminated initial letters in the corner supplied by the fab Coco Luminere. The bridesmaids walked down the aisle first, and then Amy entered the room, accompanied by her Nana who was to walk her down the aisle. The couple made their wedding vows to each other and exchanged wedding rings, Amy had been so nervous about making mistakes in the vows it ended up with giggles and laughter all round! Mark got to kiss his bride and the register was signed to make everything official!
They walked back up the aisle as Mr and Mrs Anderson and were showered in confetti as the yleft the room.

Everyone headed out to the front of the hotel for the family and group photographs, with the sun shining we got the formalities over with quickly so guests could then relax and enjoy the rest of the day.

The Romantic Couple’s Photographs
After the family photos were finished we whisked the bride and groom away for a short time to grab some gorgeous couple’s shots. The location of the Mal Maison Hotel makes it perfect for your wedding photographs as its got so many landmark sights on its doorstep!
We took advantage of the surroundings and went across the millennium bridge and along the edge of the quayside with the background showing things like the Tyne Bridge, The Sage, and The Baltic. With these pictures there is definitely no mistaking where they got married!

An amazing couple looking so in love- they breezed through their photos having a lot of fun and really enjoying themselves!

The photo of Amy holding her bouquet in the air sums it all up!
We also had some more confetti throwing on the bridge and did a bit of daft posing with the groomsman and the bridesmaids for a bit of fun!

The Speeches
The room was set ready for the meal and looked amazing with the cake set up and pretty floral centrepieces. Guests came in and took their seats for the speeches to begin.
Amy’s mum gave the first speech with some lovely words and a lot of emotion- clearly proud of the couple.

The groom took his turn next and his speech got some great reactions form the bridal party, telling stories of him and Amy getting together and having the children. He then chose this speech to drop a big bombshell to Amy that he had bought a new puppy and it would be ready to be homed with them in the coming weeks. Now they had previously had chats about getting a dog and Amy didn’t want one. Amy looked slightly horrified and unsure on if it was a joke or if he was serious. He was most definitely serious and his best man confirmed he had! (NB- since the wedding Amy told us now she’d had time to come round the idea she was actually excited for the new family pet to arrive! Phew!)
Best man Lewis was next to speak. he had some hilarious stories about him and mark growing up and the antics that they got up to. He did a brilliant job and got a lot of laughter form the crowd!

Party time!
After the meal the guests made their way to the bar areas to relax while the room was set up ready for the evening celebrations. There was a sweet buffet, a twinkly LED dance floor and the beautiful light up letters in the room, and our projector was up displaying the images for guests to see. It all came together beautifully.

After a quick cutting of the cake was done Mr and Mrs Anderson took to the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife, all the guests were watching as one of our confetti cannons was set off and rained bright sprinkles of confetti over the couple and then others joined them on the dance floor. The kids were running round having lots of fun. The party really started then and everyone was having a great time partying on the dance floor. The night was in full flow when we left with and looked like it was set to continue into the early hours- good job there was a basket of flip flops out for guests to use when their heels made their feet hurt from dancing!

Overall it was a lovely day for everyone involved and we had a brilliant time capturing the whole wedding. We hope they enjoy their photos as much as we enjoyed taking them! Thanks to Amy and Mark for choosing us to photograph their special day and allowing us to capture their memories to treasure for years to come, we had a blast!

We wish you all the best for the future together as husband and wife!
